Modern Churches, Social Clubs?
I have a confession to make. I haven’t been to church regularly. Part of it just mere laziness, listening to the same message over and over. Boredom. A mixture of discontentment toward God due to all the crazy things that’s going on in this world. Lastly, I couldn’t find a church that preach the truth straight from the Bible. To the point that I start questioning Him but never doubting Him.
Recently, I decided to attend service and I’m really glad I did. The embers of my faith is starting to glow again. The churches today are so different from 25-30 years ago. I am not saying that there’s nothing wrong with it. It is just an observation and comparison on my part. I believe all the things that we go through life aren’t coincidence at all, whether it be good or bad. I believe God has a reason and purpose. The other day, I asked Him is this the reason why, to let me see what churches or campuses, as they’re called now, to let me see what the churches have become.
A lot of things have change for the past 30 years. Once in a while I miss the 80’s. It was my decade. From music to fashion to culture to morality. Sadly, the churches today have change too.
I asked a co-worker of mine why he stop going to church. He replied and said, “They’re just bunch of social clubs.” This is not a generalization of churches here. I know they are good ones.
Church attendance is at an all time low according to the media. However, when I talked to other believers they’re main reason is it’s hard to find a church that preach the truth. I’ve been to quite a few churches here. The way I look at it they are right. Sometimes they would get muddled in political correctness or the pressure of not offending anyone.
I remember back in the days we never had coffee bars or those other nice amenities. I am not saying their bad. What is the motive behind it? Is it to attract people to come to church? Shouldn’t people go to church to get save and listen to the word of God? The worship stage is very different too. It feels like you’re in a concert. It has this theatrical aura to it. In which I would ask, does people come to feel good and motivated? Campus-that’s what most of the churches are called nowadays. The first time I heard it , I thought it was a seminary or a college bible school. What’s wrong with the word church?
Even the praise and worship songs are different. Back then, they have trumpets and tambourines. It was more joyful. Kinda like a comparison of the songs back then to today, if you know what I mean.
Believers shouldn’t give in from the pressure, conform or love the things of this world. Christ is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow. Complacency and compromise is the most dangerous to the faith. It is very subtle, silent, agile and deadly. By the time you realized you’ve seen sin, you’re already backslide. If you need inspiration, look to the apostles and Christ himself. The things they endured is not even comparable to the things we’re experiencing right now.
Remember 1Peter 5:8-9, “Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. But resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same experiences of suffering are being accomplished by your brethren who are in the world.”
