The Abuse of John 3:16
Unconditional love? Is there such a thing? Could you love someone who doesn’t love you back? Would that be the epitome of what perfect love is.
If God loves is unconditional, why would he send someone to hell for not obeying him. I hear that all the time. Things like, “What kind of God is that, if you don’t do what he wants he’ll send you to hell . That’s not unconditional love. If it’s unconditional He’ll love me no matter what. Jesus love sinners, the broken, the failures and losers. It’s the kind of people whom society have rejected, the murderer, liar, thief and prostitutes. All the sinners Jesus called have all one thing in common-they repented of their sins. From Zaccheus to Paul.
People love to quote John 3:16, “For God so loved the world, that He gave His one and only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.” This verse have been abuse so much that it’s like a magic potion to make us feel a little better when we sin or worse’ when we’re about to commit sin. They never mention the proceeding verses which is from 17-21, “for God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him. He who believes in Him is not judged; he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. This is the judgment, that the Light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the Light, for their deeds were evil. For everyone who does evil hates the Light, and does not come to the Light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. But he who practices the truth comes to the Light, so that his deeds may be manifested as having been wrought in God.”
God’s love is unconditional not because we commit sin intentionally and freely, rather that in spite of our weaknesses and failures, the wretch creature we are. He still sent His one and only son to prove to us how much he value us. There’s no relationship in this world that doesn’t involve a set of rules and standards. Look at parents and their children. Or a couple. Without it everything is chaos.
So, when you hear someone saying to you or to others regarding John 3:16, do not forget that there is a judgement. Do not rely on what other people has to say or those shares on social media that it’s okay to continue on sinning. Read the bible yourself, meditate on it and pray. Without repentance, without change then all your hearing is just a simple motivational speech.
Jesus said himself,”Don’t call me Lord if you don’t follow what I say.”
